How to Get Serious about Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Catholic Volunteer Network staff is engaging in monthly discussions on diversity and racial justice matters as we journey towards becoming a more inclusive, just, and equitable organization. We encourage CVN members to join us in this process.

This month we invite you to watch this TED Talk titled, “How to get serious about diversity and inclusion in the workplace“.

Afterwards you may wish to reflect on the following questions:

  • Share about a person you’ve encountered who is “single minded”? What is their issue? How do they make this known to those around them? How does it feel to be around them?
  • What would your Project 87 look like for your organization? Name:
    Real problems
    Real numbers
    Real consequences
  • For small organizations who do not have the opportunity to hire new staff often, are there stakeholders that you can focus on diversifying in addition to staff? (e.g. Board members, interns, vendors)
  • Stovall stated: “Imagine a place where…people feel safe, indeed expected, to bring their unassimilated, authentic selves to work every day – because the difference that they bring is both recognized and respected.” What would it take to make your organization such a place?
