Goal of Program:The mission of Christ House is to provide comprehensive and compassionate health care to sick and homeless men and to assist them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness. We accomplish our mission by: 1) Providing hospitality.; 2) Supporting patients in their healing through a holistic approach.; 3) Empowering individuals on their path toward stability.; 4) Creating community. We provide 24-hour nursing/medical care, social services, addictions counseling, structured community activities, food, clothing, and a safe place to rest and recover for all patients. Our program seeks to treat immediate medical needs of patients and attempts to find suitable and supportive housing placements for patients upon discharge.
Type of Placement:Year-long volunteers: Nurse, Homeless Respite Care Assistant, Activities Coordinator, Clinical Unit Assistant, Case Management Assistant and Administration Assistant.

Service Length:Long-term: 12 months, can be renewed for a second year. The volunteer year begins in June each year through June the following year.
Requirements:Desire to work with those who are homeless, coping with addictions, and have various physical and mental health needs.; Be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Live and fully participate in the Emmanuel House community, including weekly Community Nights. Commit to being present in mind, heart, and body throughout the year of service. Actively contribute to the Christ House mission of “providing comprehensive health care to sick, homeless men and women and to assist them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness." Provide documentation of eligibility for employment and routine immunizations. Must be at least 21 years of age at the start of the program, submit our on-line volunteer application packet (including a completed application and three reference forms), and undergo an interview process.
Financial Arrangement:Room and board in a fully furnished row house, health, dental and vision insurance (if needed), monthly stipend of $125 (after taxes), accrued time off (vacation, sick, and holiday leave).
Living Arrangements:Intentional year-long residential community at Emmanuel House, including room and board (one block from Christ House).
Program Size:Seven to eight year-long volunteers.
Training:Christ House provides on-site training. An orientation is held in early June for year-long volunteers. Volunteers also participate in two retreats and monthly in service trainings throughout the year.

This position has often been described as the "glue" that holds Christ House together. You will be a part of a team of dynamic healthcare professionals. The Clinical Unit Assistant is responsible for the coordination of health information for all patients in the Medical Unit. This includes coordination of transportation for patients, transcription and processing of orders on the medical record, and obtaining needed authorization for specialty appointments. In your daily routine, you assist the Charge Nurse with the coordination of daily activities at the Nurses’ Station, answer telephones and communicate messages professionally and timely to patients and staff as needed, maintain a clean and confidential work area and assure adequate supply of all clerical items, including medical forms and operational supplies and equipment at the Nurses’ Station. Your work will be vital to our daily operations and the high quality compassionate care that we give to our patients.
If you are interested in a career in medical Social Work, public health or public policy, or becoming a practitioner who really understands the trials that patients in poverty experience in order to get healthcare, then this is the position for you! This is a direct service position that will teach you the skills to navigate systems and become a stronger advocate. Christ House is a medical care facility for individuals who are homeless and sick. The Activities Coordinator plays a very important role at Christ House! Our patients are here to heal and we work together to provide holistic compassionate care and support. The Activities Coordinator duties include but are not limited to: Plan and coordinate activities that provide opportunities for community building, creative expression, positive social interaction, leisure skills, education, and diversion as means to enhance the quality of patients’ lives. Christ House is a medical care facility for individuals who are homeless and sick. Each year, we invite 6-8 volunteers to work and live with us, learning more about issues of poverty, homelessness, incarceration and other injustices. Additionally, our yearlong volunteers live in an intentional community together; just around the corner in a row house we call “Emmanuel House”. They meet together once a week in the evening for a common meal, reflection and time to share together. We have two weekend retreats each year and many opportunities for learning about poverty, healthcare and homelessness outside of work throughout the year.
