Goal of Program: In partnership with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, members of Mercy Volunteer Corps (MVC) enter into relationship with people who are experiencing injustices, in any form. In a spirit of mutuality, volunteers cultivate mercy and justice in the world by embracing compassionate service, social justice, spiritual growth, and a simple lifestyle in community.

Placement Type: Positions available in homeless and community outreach, peace and justice advocacy, immigration and refugee services, legal work, elderly outreach, counseling, rural and urban agriculture, women and children services, teaching (elementary, high school, special education), campus ministry, tutoring (GED, adult literacy), after school programs, healthcare (nursing), therapy (physical, occupational, speech), and volunteer coordination.

Description: Ignite Peace mobilizes individuals and organizations throughout the city to take action for systemic change and equips them with practical skills, knowledge, and resources to build a culture of nonviolence and anti-racism. Ignite Peace focuses its education and advocacy efforts on four core issues – criminal justice, immigration justice, anti-racism and nonviolence. The volunteer will serve as a program assistant as part of a collaborative team. The volunteer will advance their expertise in peace and nonviolence practices through training; facilitate education sessions on nonviolence and anti-racism; research and design informational materials on the core issues; plan programs, rallies, and prayer services; and engage with various collaborating groups.

Description: As the only faith-based, non-profit health system in the area, St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System operates two hospitals with inpatient, outpatient, skilled-acute care, and emergency department facilities. The volunteer will be placed in the emergency department’s medical home program which specifically cares for vulnerable persons who are under or uninsured. A volunteer will serve as a community resource navigator by identifying, educating, and assisting patients in establishing and maintaining a primary care office as well as accessing resources for social determinants of health. The volunteer will also have an opportunity to train and support program interns.

Description: St. Boniface School is an elementary school and belongs to the urban school structure of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The school serves about 200 students from various ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds, with nearly all families at or below the national poverty level. A volunteer is needed as an intermediate team classroom aide (grades 3-5). The volunteer will support the teachers’ needs in the classroom with preparation of lessons and materials; engage in one-on-one and small group instruction; provide supervision on the playground and at lunch; and assist with afterschool clubs as needed.
