Salesian Lay Missioners
Goal of Program
Salesian Lay Missioners (SLMs) work together with Salesian priests, brothers, and sisters to care for disadvantaged youth in developing countries. This is done through education, job training and constructive recreational activities. The goal is to have youngsters achieve intellectual, emotional, and spiritual maturity, thus becoming self-sufficient and contributing members of society with Christian values and good social skills.

Animal husbandry specialist, agronomist, arts and crafts instructor, carpenter, catechist, child care, coach, community organizer, computer operator, construction worker, craftsman, dentist, doctor, electrician, engineer, handyman, health care worker, Hispanic ministry, maintenance specialist, mechanic, nurse, nurse's aide, pastoral/parish ministry, plumber, printer, recreation specialist, social worker, teacher, youth minister.

Service Length
Typical: One year minimum (renewable up to 3 years). Inquire for exceptions.
Program Size
Approximately 10-15 Salesian Lay Missioners per year.
Requirements
Single and married, men and women (with no dependents), minimum age of 20, no maximum age but must be in good health, Catholic commitment and willingness to work within the Church and with the Salesians of Don Bosco, college education or work experience, conversational knowledge of mission site language helpful, references, criminal background check, physical & psychological examination, motor vehicle driving record, phone interview, and mandatory 1-month orientation. Each candidate is required to attend one discernment weekend prior to receiving invitation to orientation.
Financial Arrangements
No fundraising. All provided by receiving Salesian community along with medical insurance, travel to/from the site, monthly stipend, and orientation prior to departure. Loan deferment is possible.
Living Arrangements
SLMs live in community with other volunteers and/or with the Religious Communities.
Training
Come & See Discernment Weekend and a 3 week orientation prior to departure.
