Goal of Program

In partnership with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, members of Mercy Volunteer Corps (MVC) enter into relationship with people who are experiencing injustices, in any form. In a spirit of mutuality, volunteers cultivate mercy and justice in the world by embracing compassionate service, social justice, spiritual growth, and a simple lifestyle in community.

Type of Placement

Positions available in homeless and community outreach, peace and justice advocacy, immigration and refugee services, legal work, elderly outreach, counseling, rural and urban agriculture, women and children services, teaching (elementary, high school, special education), campus ministry, tutoring (GED, adult literacy), after school programs, healthcare (nursing), therapy (physical, occupational, speech), and volunteer coordination.

Service Area

Continental United States and Guyana, South America.

Service Length

One year commitment that begins in August every year. Mercy Volunteers are welcome to apply for additional years of service. The summer program is 6 weeks beginning at the end of May.

Program Size

35-50 volunteers per year.

Requirements

Volunteers must be 21 years of age, single or married with no dependents, hold a high school diploma or GED.

Financial Arrangements

Housing, transportation, health insurance, food & personal stipends, and school loan deferment. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to orientation in early August.

Living Arrangements

Mercy Volunteers live together in community.

Training

Mercy Volunteers participate in a week-long orientation at the start of their commitment. Volunteers serving internationally receive cross cultural training.
