VIDES+USA

Goal of Program

VIDES+USA volunteer missioners accompany marginalized and at-risk youth and women to become productive members of society. As they share life in Christ, they promote education, development, social justice, and solidarity. They learn the value of generosity in giving of themselves and incorporating spirituality into the rhythm of everyday living. VIDES Volunteer Missioners serve together with members of the Salesian Family (Priests, Brothers, Sisters, Cooperators, etc.) VIDES+USA is part of VIDES International, the lay volunteer program sponsored by the Salesian Sisters in 42 countries throughout the world.

Los misioneros voluntarios de VIDES + USA acompañan a jóvenes y mujeres marginados y en riesgo para convertirse en miembros productivos de la sociedad. Al compartir la vida en Cristo, promueven la educación, el desarrollo, la justicia social y la solidaridad. Aprenden el valor de la generosidad al entregarse a sí mismos e incorporar la espiritualidad al ritmo de la vida diaria. Los Misioneros Voluntarios de VIDES sirven junto con miembros de la Familia Salesiana (Sacerdotes, Hermanos, Hermanas, Cooperadores, etc.) VIDES + USA es parte de VIDES Internacional, el programa de voluntariado laico patrocinado por las Hermanas Salesianas en 42 países de todo el mundo.

Type of Placement

A variety of educational, development, and outreach services are offered benefiting especially children, young adults, and women. These services include religious education, teaching on all levels, youth ministry, social services, child care, migrant worker ministry, communications and public relations, health care services in some mission sites, secretarial and office work, fund-raising and grant writing, and other youth or women promotion related projects.

International: Africa; North, Central and South America; Asia; Europe and Australia. National: California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas.

Service Length

Two months to two years.

Program Size

5 to 20 volunteers for VIDES+USA; Internationally over 2,000 volunteers in over 42 VIDES international sites.

Requirements

20-50 years of age; conversational knowledge of the language spoken in the country; love for youth and young adults; open to living in a religious community; U.S. citizen or resident

Financial Arrangements

VIDES provides the volunteer with basic health insurance, room and board. If needed, applicants may apply for a sponsorship to participate in the two-three week formation/service camp, otherwise a contribution is requested. Volunteers are responsible for transportation costs to and from the Formation/Service Camp and to the service site. All personal expenses are the responsibility of the volunteer. Student loan deferment or forbearance is usually possible.

Living Arrangements

In a religious community, possibly with other volunteers.

Training

Two week Formation Service Camp (January, June or July) is required before national or international service.

November 15 for January new volunteer orientation, April 15 for June orientation, May 15 for July
