The Deo Gratias Ministry Detroit opportunity is a 10-month service experience that calls 3-5 compassionate adults to live and serve in the spirit of St. Francis.
You will help some of Detroit’s most vulnerable by working alongside Felician Sisters in a ministry of presence offering your help in the following areas: welcome and serve neighbors in the Deo Gratias Café to meet and identify the needs of the community; stock shelves and work with guests in the food pantry; help prepare a new community garden, teach and assess reading skills to adults and children in a literacy program, assist and join guests in an art program; work and schedule with a caseworker to help guests assess social services that could benefit them.
Requirements: We ask volunteers to
- be 18 – 39 years old
- be able to live independently in a community setting participating in cleaning and meal preparation
- volunteer 40 hours each week
- live on-site
- volunteer entire 10-months (September 2022 – June 2023)
- participate or be respectful of daily prayer and share volunteer experiences through a daily reflection
- complete and submit the Deo Gratias Application with references
- be interviewed and complete a background check, medical exam and drug-screening
- complete a program for the protection of vulnerable people (Protecting God’s Children, Mandated Reporter Training, etc.)
