Share Foundation with the Handicapped

Goal of Program

To provide a peaceful, loving community for developmentally disabled adults where people's self worth can come to the surface and they can share in the joy of being valued for who they are, not what they can do.

Type of Placement

Long-term: Live-in house manager (steward), providing companionship and guidance to two mildly to moderately mentally challenged adults. Focus on what we are able to do and foster independence by encouraging them to become all they can be. Teach daily living and vocational skills. Volunteers live in one of 15 homes on site and share in the joy of living in community.

Service Length

Long-term: One year. Short-term: Six weeks in summer.

Program Size

Long-term: Fifteen volunteers. Short-term: 25 volunteers.

Requirements

Long-term: Degree preferred. Experience working with developmentally disabled people helpful. Patience, acceptance of people with different abilities. Willingness to make a one-year commitment. Short-term: Summer volunteers must be 18 or over.

Financial Arrangements

Long-term: Room and board, health insurance, $250 stipend per week, two days off each week on a rotating basis, bonus of $1,200 at the end of one year of completed service. [Bonus increases after each year of additional service.] Paid time off: 1 week at Easter, 1 week at Thanksgiving and 2 weeks at Christmas. Short-term: Room and board, small education stipend.

Living Arrangements

Long-term: Volunteer lives in one of 15 three-bedroom homes in the community of Sharing Meadows. Volunteer shares home with two mildly to moderately mentally challenged adults of the same gender.

Training

Long-term: Initial four-day orientation, ongoing training and support throughout the year. Short-term: Orientation, ongoing support each week. New volunteers are assigned a mentor with several years of experience with our program.
