Albanian & American Open Hand Association Inc.

Goal of Program

The goal of our program is to provide regular food and nutritional supplies to food insecure individuals and families in the area of the city that we service, both by food pantry days of operation at the pantry where people will come and take prepared groceries provided by our partnering food bank, as well as delivery of groceries to those who are less capable of travel. We also provide printed copies of government pamphlets on a range of services that the clients we service may not be aware are available to them, and in some cases assist those men and women in understanding these pamphlets, applications, and where legal and competent to do so (and within the scope of our operations) assist in filling out forms to better help the community to receive services that might help them to benefits that might reduce their need to our Food Pantry service. We do these services in such a way that is in keeping with the Human Dignity of each person that we come to the aid of, as all are children of God.

Type of Placement

AAOHA located in Bronx County, NYC is a 501(c)3 food pantry and delivery service that indiscriminately supplies much needed nutrition to food insecure individuals and families in a way that protects the Human Dignity of all Gods Children.

Service Area

Bronx, NY

Service Length

2 month month rotations with options to renew

Program Size

At present we provide food services in the amount of roughly 1,000 bags twice weekly to individuals and families which is twice the number that we served in 2022, and before The Sisters of Reparation Charitable Trust had become involved. Soon, we hope that with their aid, and with the aid of the Catholic Volunteer Network, we can grown to service many more people who are in need of food supplies, baby formula, pet food, as no family should have to decide if food is the necessity they should sacrifice in order for shelter, or no child should have to rely on solely the food provided in school with free/reduced fare breakfast and lunch as their only food source.

Requirements

A compassionate heart, unbiased, unafraid of serving and moving around in Bronx County, NY

Financial Arrangements

At present while we are in the process of re-organizing, as well as now under the guidance of a Roman Catholic entity who is interested in helping us to grow our essential food pantry with the food bank, and is also granting money to our organization so that we may grow, we are not at present capable of offering financial remuneration to those who volunteer just yet. We would greatly like to get to the point where we could offer such assistance in the form of financial arrangements to our volunteers, especially room and baord (in a shared room space, separated by gender) and a stipend with transportation through the public transportation system so as to be able to venture out into other parts of the city such as Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, from the Bronx where we are located.

Living Arrangements

As we have started working with a granting organization that has been a Catholic Charity for 120 years, they have assured me that they will work to find a community of Men and Women religious through which our Volunteers from the Catholic Volunteer Network may be able to be sheltered during their time volunteering with us providing food to the hungry with this corporal work of mercy.

Training

All volunteers will receive a volunteer handbook which must be read and initialed on every page and acknowledgements signed at the end agreeing to asgere to its policies. Any training involved will be taught by relevant employees/staff. Anybody that is volunteering that has certifications that may be useful in any circumstance should bring the original with them so as to make a photocopy and scan for our records as well as the safety of the volunteer (ie. Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED, or Forklift Operators license, OSHA certifications)
