Maggie’s Place provides safe housing and a nurturing community for pregnant and parenting women experiencing homelessness in Phoenix, Arizona. Our five homes house between four and seven moms along with their babies and are staffed by live-in AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps stability mentors are radical change-makers who are committed to living in intentional community with pregnant women and mothers experiencing homelessness. With the tools of trauma-informed care and a dedication to servant leadership, AmeriCorps are on the frontlines of the fight to put an end to ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and break the relentless cycle of poverty.
Americorps members live in the homes alongside moms and teammates sharing meals, doing chores, celebrating accomplishments, and working through hard things together. Members take initiative in a variety of situations that range from a mom going into labor, to roommate conflicts, to showing hospitality to visitors and new community members. They create a safe, welcoming, home-like environment for the moms so moms can focus on achieving their goals.
They must be emotionally mature and resilient, empathetic, accepting of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures, and open to growing through uncomfortable situations. We train Corps members in conflict resolution, trauma-informed care, best practices for working with vulnerable populations, and emotional de-escalation techniques.
